Tuesday 30th September
Monthly Medal day held on new 18 hole course

A great day with 52 starters including a visit from one of Callala’s long lost Sons, Brian Herring. Also joining us as visitors were Rod Elliott and Gary Sawyer from Worrigee.
Well the new 18 must certainly suit Geoff Blackshaw who fired off an impressive 61 to take the Monthly Medal as well as overall honors including “B” grade.
Close behind was Legend (new driver) Barry Whitlock who must be very proud to achieve his result on the course that he has been so involved in with its final completion.
Visitor Rod Elliott thought he would show the rest of us a bit of Worrigee class by coming in to third place and also taking out “A” grade for the day.
Everyone had a great day with the weather being kind be it for a very strong wind developing later in the morning.
All players had a smile on their face when Chef Jamie Reardon advised that the normal great lunch that is served on Monthly Medal days will happen next Tuesday. That News will getting us all turning up next week.

Callala Golf Course Official Opening and Members Day

I hope all those Callala and surrounding area people who attended for the Official Opening enjoyed the event. If you could not make it then you missed a great historic event in your area.
The day saw some 84 Members turn up to play a three person Ambrose with the aim of all to enjoy a great day of golf on the new 18 hole course.
The festivities began around 8am with players and visitors arriving for the opening.
Dignitaries in attendance for the big event were:-
Joanna Gash Shoalhaven district Mayor.
Shelley Hancock, Local Member.
Ann Sudmalis, Federal Member for Gilmore.
Graeme Phillipson, General Manager, NSW Golf.
Ron Adams (President) and Franc Turski (Publicity Officer) Illawarra Golf.
After a short welcoming and history speech from our own President of Golf, Steve Chapman he thanked all for coming and then invited Shelley Hancock to Officially Open the Callala 18 hole Golf Course.
Big congratulation to both Steve and Shelley for their great speeches, they certainly set the mood for a great day to follow.
The big moment had arrived after 37 years of Callala district and surrounding area Volunteers and supporters the 18 hole Callala golf course was about to be Officially Opened.
In unison the three wise ladies unveiled the plaque celebrating the great and historic event.
The Local Member,Shelley Hancock then uttered those immortal words declaring the Callala Golf Course Officially Opened to huge cheers and applauding from the gathered members and visitors.
Next came a huge event in one of the original visionaries life with Doug Balkwill again as he did in 1995 hitting the first ball off the first tee to celebrate the fulfillment of his and a very large number of living and deceased volunteers dream.
What a great sense of satisfaction and pride to propel that same ball off on its way with a perfectly executed drive.
The next highlight of the day was to come when Norma Cowey stepped up to the tee and in acknowledgment of all the women of the golf club, past and present who without their work and contributions the whole thing would have never gotten past the dream stage.
Norma not to be outdone by young Doug executed a perfect drive to the cheers and applause of the members and visitors.
To add to Doug’s pride was the knowledge that his great friend Greg Stores was there swelling with the same pride and satisfaction that Doug was felling for you see Doug Balkwill and many others know that the dream of the 18 hole completed course would have never happened without Greg Stores organizational skills and expertise with the course planning and development.
Greg was described by those who know him best as the quiet and unassuming lynch pin of the early club and course development. Greg shuns any attention or accolades but knows that the members who know of the history of the club hold him in great esteem.
Thank you Greg we the members who now enjoy the course hold you and all those “Dad’s Army” of Volunteers with the greatest of respect and gratitude and will be eternally in yours and their debt for the unselfish and dedicated devotion to the dream.
A Big Thanks to the ladies golf and Gordana Sesum who put on a great morning tea and lunch. As usual ladies you have excelled.
Also congratulations to Sandra Walters on her win with the raffle.
Thank you to our guru of raffles Andrew Anderson on another very successful raffle and most importantly to all those wonderful members and visitors who supported it.
After the highlight of Doug and Norma hitting such great drives the Members day got underway with the first group Steve Chapman, Barry Whitlock, Aoauli Carrett, Charlie Crane, Graeme Weston and Marg Mills.
The winners on the day was to go to group of Alice Poole, Dickie Poole and the long hitting Goran Vujic.
As we all know the real winners of the day were the Members of Callala golf and all the people who are going to come and enjoy a great 18 hole golf course.
Tried to add more photos but program won't let me; Sorry!
